ELECT CARYL SHUHAM FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER
Since 2018, Caryl Shuham has served the City of Hollywood as an elected City Commissioner. As Broward County Commissioner, she will continue her work to protect the environment, strengthen our local economy, increase public safety, preserve local history, and promote our unique neighborhoods. She is committed to encouraging smart, resilient development throughout the County, with a special emphasis on underutilized commercial corridors and increasing access to housing that is affordable.
Caryl's dedication to improving Broward County is significant. She serves on the executive committee of the Solid Waste Disposal and Recyclable Materials Processing Authority of Broward County (SWA), the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization Board (MPO), the Broward County Climate Change Task Force (CCTF), the executive committee of the Metro Transportation Engineering and Construction Cooperative (MTECC) and was recently elected chair of the Broward County Transportation Disadvantaged Local Coordinating Board (TDLCB). Following the Surfside tragedy at Champlain Towers, she also served on the Broward County Condominium Structural Issues Committee.
Caryl’s contributions have earned her recognition as a Florida League of Cities Home Rule Hero, the Broward County School Board Outstanding Mentor of the Year, and she is a member of the Hollywood Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). She has completed the Florida League of Cities Institute for Elected Municipal Officials and received a Certificate of Achievement from the Broward County Leaders Water and Climate Academy.
Caryl mentors young women students at Hollywood Hills High School through the Women of Tomorrow program. She is a Leadership Hollywood graduate and has held several volunteer leadership roles with Broward Public Schools Partners In Education, the David Posnack JCC, and the local chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. She is a member of the Hollywood Rotary Club, the Lions Club of Hollywood, the Hollywood Historical Society, the Hollywood Women’s Club, the Art & Culture Center of Hollywood, and her family belongs to Temple Beth El in Hollywood.
Caryl holds a degree in civil engineering from the Johns Hopkins University and a law degree from the University of Maryland. She continues her private law practice as a construction lawyer certified by The Florida Bar. Her expertise includes preparing and negotiating construction contracts, along with a focus on risk allocation, insurance, and bonding. In addition, she is a Supreme Court of Florida Certified Circuit Court Civil Mediator.
Caryl and her husband, Marty live in Hollywood with their dog Twyla. They are the proud parents of three sons: Simon, an aerospace mechanical engineer; Matt, a journalist; and Ben, a physician – all three are the product of Broward County Public Schools.
